USI-SOAS Project Partnership

The USI-CMHCS partnered with the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) University of London to develop a project titled ‘Staging the Trial of the Last Mughal Emperor of India (1858): History, Power, and Performance in The Courtroom’. This project seeks to use the military trial of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal Emperor of India, by the East India Company in 1858 to understand the continuing legacies of colonial law in post-colonial India and post-Imperial Britain, while also analysing the relationship between law and performance, and the ways in which power and history are staged in the courtroom. The expected date of commencement is 01 March 2022 and the duration of the project is 30 months.
