A Talk on the subject ‘Fighting International Terrorism in Syria’ was delivered at USI on 12 Mar 2014 by His Excellency, Dr Riad Kamel Abbas, Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic in India, with Shri Kanwal Sibal, IFS (Retd), former Foreign Secretary of India in Chair. The Syrian Ambassador was accompanied by Dr Waiel SH Awwad, Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) South Asia Bureau Chief and President of the Foreign Correspondents Club of South Asia in Delhi. A number of members from the diplomatic community in Delhi also attended the talk. A short film of 18 minutes duration depicting the violence being allegedly perpetrated by Al Qaeda and its associates in Syria was also screened. Thereafter, the Ambassador gave his perception of the situation and various forces at work in Syria including the external players. The talk was followed by a free and frank interactive session. By the end of the talk it was quite clear that the situation in Syria is very complex and it will be sometime before any solution emerges.
