The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

USI - Chief of Air Staff Essay Competition


At the request of the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Air), the USI–CAS Essay Competition was instituted in 2024. The inaugural competition, open to all commissioned officers of the Indian Air Force, was evaluated in 2025.

From 2026 onwards, the competition will be open to commissioned officers of all three Services, further broadening its scope and fostering jointness in professional military thought.

Participants are encouraged to explore and critically analyse issues related to aerospace operations, air power, emerging technologies, and the evolving character of warfare in the aerospace domain. Essays are evaluated by a panel of eminent experts based on research depth, originality, clarity of expression, analytical rigour, and strategic relevance.

Awards

  • Winner: Gold Medal, cash prize of ₹45,000, certificate, and USI Life Membership (gratis)

  • Runner-up: Silver Medal, cash prize of ₹30,000, certificate, and USI Life Membership (gratis)

Selected essays are published in the USI Journal, contributing to informed debate and professional knowledge within the armed forces and the wider strategic community.
