The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

Major General BK Sharma, AVSM, SM** (Retd)

Maj Gen BK Sharma is an Infantry Veteran with rich operational experience and expertise in strategic affairs and Multi-domain warfare.  He is the Director General of United Service Institution of India (USI), India’s oldest national security institution established in 1870. He was conferred three military awards by the President of India for rendering exceptional distinguished national service and for displaying courage. Besides, he was conferred national award for nation building by the Confederation of Educational Excellence of India in 2017.  He is an alumni of prestigious Defence Services Staff College, Higher Command and National Defence College. He trained in International Peacekeeping in Santiago (Chile). He has teneted prestigious command, Instructional and staff appointments at the Ministry of Defence. He has represented his country as UN Military Observer in Central America and has been India’s Defence Attaché in Central Asia. He specializes in Strategic Net Assessment, Scenario Building, Strategic Gaming and Red Teaming.

          He has participated in several International Conferences organised by UN, OSCE, CIISS, Xiangshan Forum, Sichuan university, SCO Forum, BRICS Forum, Eurasian Economic Forum, MOSCOW Economic Forum, St. Petersbung International Economic Forum, Yasin Dialogue, Primikov dialogue, Valdai International Conference, Bucharest Conference, Higher School of economics (Russia), Roscongress events, CAMCA and several other conference in East Asia, South Asia, Central Asia and Europe.

         He has edited several books and contributed seminal papers in Indian and foreign publications.   He regularly participates in Track-1.5 Level dialogues.
