The United Service Institution of India was founded in 1870 by a soldier scholar, Colonel (later Major General) Sir Charles MacGregor. The story of its growth is the story of the growth of the Indian Armed Forces. It was founded for ‘furtherance of interest and knowledge in the art, science and literature of the Defence Services.’

General. Both serving and retired officers, as per the eligibility criteria given in Para 2 below, and cadets from Defence Service Academies are eligible. Membership is granted exclusively to eligible individuals and does not extend to dependents. The USI reserves the right to accept or reject applications.

Note – Facilities for Life and Ordinary members are same. Grace period of two months from date of expiring of membership for Life Member and upto 31 May for Ordinary Member is allowed for renewal at prevailing rate. Thereafter, entrance fee is to be paid again. No notice is sent for renewal. For conversion from Ordinary to Life Membership only the entrance fee portion will be adjusted. Course Membership is not renewable and is valid for one course only.
Issue of Membership card: Digital membership card shall be issued, along with proof of identity. Member's personal visit is necessary to sign the membership register.

SPECIAL CIVILIAN MEMBERSHIP — ELIGIBILITY (CRITERIA)
Eligibility. Persons who have distinguished themselves in any field, specially in the field of National / International Security, economics, history and so on are eligible to be enrolled as Special Member (Civilian).
Duration. Duration of such membership is 10 years, and renewable thereafter as per terms and conditions as applicable then. Application Form Fee is Rs. 200/- each, which will not be refunded in any circumstances.

Note:
After payment of the application fee, the application form will be rendered for filling in personal details and submitting the application to USI for approval.
After approval by the Governing Council, the applicant will be informed for payment of membership fee of Rs. 30,000/- (for 10 years).
When payment is received, the applicant will be allotted a membership number and issued the membership card.
Eligibility. Vice Chancellors, Heads of Department of Defence Studies of Universities, military correspondents of Indian newspapers / news agencies, and other distinguished persons associated with the field of national security and related subjects, academicians, research fellows and media persons are eligible to be enrolled as Associate Members.
