The Invisible Battlefield : Electromagnetic Spectrum Management

About the Occasional Paper

This Occasional Paper examines the growing importance of electromagnetic spectrum management as a decisive enabler of contemporary military operations. Drawing on lessons from recent conflicts and evolving military doctrines, it analyses how modern militaries are competing for electromagnetic superiority and adapting to increasingly contested spectrum environments. The paper argues that India faces two fundamentally different electromagnetic challenges, a densely populated, co-located spectrum environment along its western borders and a high altitude, infrastructure constrained and space dependent environment along its northern borders. It concludes with recommendations for strengthening India's electromagnetic spectrum operations, resilience and warfighting effectiveness.
