India’s contributions to the war effort in the First World War resulted in its participation in the Paris Conference, where she signed the Treaty of Versailles and became a founder-member of the League of Nations. One of the outcomes of the joint USI-MEA “India and the Great War” centenary commemoration project (2014-2018) has been the need to put into the public domain some of the significant engagements involving India during the First World War which illustrate a continuity of interest for Indian foreign policy. In this process of commemoration, one war theatre where the Indian Army’s significant role has not received appropriate recognition, is the contribution of Indian troops in the Dardanelles (1915). India had a crucial role to play in the Gallipoli campaign, which was a defining moment in the contemporary histories of Australia, New Zealand and Turkey. An International Seminar on Gallipoli organized by the Indian Council for World Affairs (ICWA) and the United Service Institution (USI) of India in April 2021, provided an opportunity for participants to recall the events of the Gallipoli campaign from their national perspectives. It allowed the events to be viewed through both a historical as well as a contemporary prism thereby gaining a better understanding of their historical significance in military history as well as their impact on International Relations over the past century. This book revisits the Indian contribution to the campaign at Gallipoli. It recalls the bravery, professionalism and sacrifice of the Indian soldiers, who contributed immensely towards the Allied victory in the First World War. In the process, it also underlines the significance of this contribution to India’s role as a founder of the modern multilateral system, and situates it in the context of her current efforts for “reformed multilateralism” and the evolution of her strategic partnerships in the wider Indo-Pacific region.   Orders may be placed directly with the following:- Col SK Sharma (Retd) Deputy Director (Adm) Ph.: 011-20862316 Email: ddadm@usiofindia.org
