Study Disciplines
 

1. The Centre undertakes studies in the following core areas: -
 

(a)  

Security Studies: These would include topics related to regional security environment that have a bearing on shaping national security policies. Some of the important areas are: shifts in the international security system, multipolarity vs unipolarity, issues related to comprehensive and collective security, role and importance of non-state actors and transnational organizations, and so on. These studies are to be prospective in nature to cover medium term time frame that will include simulation exercises to assess comprehensive challenges and opportunities facing India and the region, over the next 10-15 years. The areas of interest are as follows:-
 

(i)     Economic Growth and Military Power – The Extent of Symmetry to be Maintained.
 
(ii) Boundary and Frontier Policies.
 
(iii) IW / EW: Information as an Element of National Power
 
(iv) 

Defence Framework and the Future Design of International Relations: A Study of Indo-US Relations; US Policies and Perspectives
 

(v)

Nuclear Iran – The Consequences of the Iran Nuclear Crisis for Peace and Stability in Asia and the Responses of Asian Powers to a nuclear Iran; Implications for West Asian Peace and Security
 

(vi) Study on Multinational and Coalition Operations – Lessons for India.

 

(b)

Regional Studies: These studies would be in the form of strategic analysis and military balance between main challengers along India's periphery and other neighbours including extended strategic neighbourhood, in consonance with India's strategic vision. The aim is evaluation of political, economic, military and technological and other related capabilities of potential challengers and their impact on Indian security, options for India and the types of future military capabilities that need to be developed to meet these challenges. The areas of interest are as follows:-
 

(i) Critical Elements of India’s Look East Policy: A Study of Social, Economic, Political Security Issues.
 
(ii) Asia 2020: Scenario Based Study to Define the Likely Geo-Political, Geo-Economic Contours and Implications for India.
 
(iii) South Asia – Nepal, Bangla Desh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar – Society, Polity and Military.
 
(iv) Understanding Internal Security Dynamics in India/South Asia and Its Impact
on Regional Balance.
 
(v) Central Asia and Russia.
 
(vi) The North East.
 
(vii)    Migration.

 

(c)

Military Studies: The emphasis would be on the following aspects:-

(i)   

Facilitating and Developing Core Competence for the Armed Forces in War Gaming, Simulation and Table Top Exercises.
 

(ii)

Strategic Engagement: A Policy Framework, including Use of Military Power.
 

(iii)

Joint and Integrated Theatre Commands and Defence Logistics – A Conceptual and Organisational Analysis.
 

(iv) BMD – Philosophy and Role in India’s Security Calculations.
 
(v) Maritime Issues : Growth of Littoral Navies and Its Implications for India.
 
(vi)

PLA Force Transformation – Managing Change: A Study of PLA Officer Corps.
 

(d)

Simulation and Modelling. Carrying out simulation and modelling including scenario building, crisis and politico-military gaming, either as stand-alone exercises to validate research findings or on contractual basis.
